My Work

My Action Plan

For my action plan I wrote a letter to Nespresso USA Inc.  because they are using child labor in their farms that they buy from. This is my letter:

Dear Nespresso,

My name is Sarah and I am a 5th grader at River Oaks Elementary in Houston, TX. We are currently doing a project called Exhibition. Exhibition is when we pick a world problem and try to find a solution to it. The topic I chose is Child Labor and this is how I am taking action.

The reason I am writing this letter is because there have been reports of Nespresso using child labor. Many products use child labor. Child labor is work that is harmful to kids, or physically or mentally hurts them. There are many strict child labor laws, but people just don’t follow them. There are many lasting effects of child labor and can be very harmful.

The Effects of Child Labor:

  • Vulnerable to injuries

  • Poor mental health

  • Poor physical health

  • No education

  • No job opportunities as adults

  • Their own families as adults might be poor

  •  Hinders Social Development

  • Premature aging

  • Depression

  • Malnourishment

  • Brain Damage

  • Post -Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

There are many ways you can help stop using child labor in the supply chain. You can talk to the owners or visit the farm to see if there are ways to stop using child labor,  spread the word about child labor using the power of social media, think about ethically investing, and ethical consumerism.

The effects of child labor are saddening and last a lifetime. Please stop buying from farms that use child labor, visit farms more often to check for children working, and make sure you don’t invest in companies using child labor. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I would love a response.

Sincerely,

Sarah

Some of the things I have done to raise awareness of child labor is written poems, essays, made art pieces, and I even wrote a letter to a company that was using child labor!

Hi. My name is Sarah and I'm the 5th grade at ROE.

I wanted to make people understand how working kids feel. I found photos on the internet. I looked for products that are most commonly made with child labor. I also looked for photos of children working. I placed the photos on paper trying to contrast light and dark to make it more interesting and make it so you could see everything. I layered the pictures so they had more depth.

It was my first time making a collage and I think I did good. I like how some of the pictures stick out beyond the paper. I think it showed people the products made by child labor and hopefully it will make them not buy them.
